HeyGen fits video translation and teams, D-ID fits presenter videos and agents, Hedra fits expressive talking photos. Compare prices, free tiers, limits.

AvatarCraft AI

Quick answer

  • HeyGen is best for teams that need video translation into many languages, a full studio editor, and collaboration features.
  • D-ID is best for business presenter videos, interactive visual agents, and API use, with the lowest-priced entry plan of the three.
  • Hedra is best for creators who want any face, from a photo to a painting, to perform an audio track, with many other AI models in the same studio.
  • AvatarCraft AI is best for one photo and one short message: it lip-syncs a single photo to speech or a song, and you can try it with 30 free credits before choosing a plan.

How did we compare HeyGen, D-ID, Hedra and AvatarCraft AI?

We compared the four tools on eight criteria, using only each vendor's official pricing and product pages, checked on October 9, 2026:

  1. Input types: script, audio, recording, photo, or existing video.
  2. Photo vs preset avatar: your own photo, a stock presenter, or both.
  3. Video translation and dubbing: translating an existing video into another language.
  4. Lip sync of existing video: re-syncing uploaded footage to new audio.
  5. Voice options and cloning: library size and voice cloning.
  6. Free tier: what you get before paying.
  7. Starting price: the lowest paid plan.
  8. Best for: the workflow each tool suits.

The comparison covers features and plans, not output quality; the testing section below shows how to judge quality yourself.

What are HeyGen's strengths and trade-offs?

HeyGen's strengths and trade-offs are those of the most complete production platform of the four: broad features, but a subscription to match. The HeyGen pricing page lists an AI studio editor, 75+ video templates, PowerPoint and PDF imports, and exports up to 1080p on Creator and 4K on Pro.

Strengths:

  • Video translation. HeyGen translates an uploaded video or YouTube link into 175+ languages and dialects with voice cloning and lip sync, up to 10 languages at once. Pro adds proofreading of the translated script.
  • Existing-video lip sync. HeyGen's lip sync tool accepts MP4, MOV or WEBM files and can sync every face in a scene, not only the main speaker.
  • Team features. The Business plan ($149/month plus $20 per extra seat) adds workspace collaboration, draft commenting, SAML/SSO, SCORM export and LMS integrations.

Trade-offs:

  • Higher output quality and team tools sit on higher tiers: 4K export and translation proofreading start at Pro ($49/month), and collaboration features at Business.
  • The Free plan allows 1 to 3 videos per month depending on region, each up to 1 minute, and free videos carry a HeyGen watermark.

What are D-ID's strengths and trade-offs?

D-ID's strengths and trade-offs follow from its business focus: a cheap entry plan, translation and agents, but watermarks on lower tiers. D-ID animates a single image from text or audio, or builds a personal avatar from a short video.

Strengths:

  • Low entry price. On the D-ID pricing page, Lite is $5.90/month billed monthly ($4.70/month billed annually) with 10 minutes per month.
  • Video Translate. D-ID clones the speaker's voice, adapts lip movements to the new language, and lets you edit the translated text before generating.
  • Interactive agents and API. Every plan, including the trial, lists Agents and API access, and API minutes come from the same balance as the web app.

Trade-offs:

  • Trial videos have a full-screen watermark, Lite videos carry a D-ID watermark, and Pro ($29/month for 15 minutes) is the first plan that lists a commercial use license.
  • Minutes do not roll over, and video length is rounded up to the nearest 15 seconds.
  • Premium presenters are not supported on Lite.

What are Hedra's strengths and trade-offs?

Hedra's strengths and trade-offs come from being a multi-model creative studio: wide creative range, but less predictable costs. Hedra runs its own Character 3 and Avatar models alongside third-party video, image and voice models, and animates any picture with a legible face to an audio recording.

Strengths:

  • Face flexibility. Hedra's talking photo page shows photographs, illustrations, cartoons, 3D characters, puppets and paintings driven by the same recording.
  • Long takes. Hedra says Character 3 runs up to ten minutes in a single generation.
  • Two speakers in one shot. Hedra's talking avatar page describes passing one audio track per speaker for a two-person scene.
  • Model range. One studio covers video, image and audio models.

Trade-offs:

  • Credits are spent across models at different rates, so cost per video is harder to predict. The Hedra pricing page lists Basic at $20/month for 2,000 credits, and monthly credits do not carry over.
  • Hedra offers a free plan, but the pricing page does not list its limits.
  • Hedra has no dedicated one-click video translation tool on the pages we checked; you bring a recording in each language.

Where does AvatarCraft AI fit, and what doesn't it do?

AvatarCraft AI is an AI talking photo generator: it lip-syncs one photo to speech or a song and returns a talking or singing video. AvatarCraft AI is a focused, lower-commitment option, not a full production suite.

What AvatarCraft AI does:

  • Animates one clear, front-facing face from your photo, an illustration, a pet or a cartoon character, or one of 160+ preset avatars.
  • Takes audio from text to speech (330+ voices in 20+ languages), an uploaded file, or a recording. Voice cloning is on the Clone tab, from a 3- to 60-second sample.
  • Re-syncs an existing video to new audio with the separate lip sync video tool.
  • Charges 1 credit per second at 540p, or 2 credits per second at 720p on a paid plan. New accounts get 30 free credits, enough for one 20-second video. Paid plans are monthly or annual subscriptions; separate credit packs aren't available right now.

What AvatarCraft AI does not do:

  • No video translation or dubbing; choose HeyGen or D-ID for that.
  • One face per video: no multi-speaker scenes and no batch generation.
  • Audio is 3 to 60 seconds per video (20 seconds on the free plan), so long training videos fit HeyGen or Hedra better.
  • No speed, pitch or emotion sliders; pick a different voice instead.
  • Talking photos export at 540p or 720p (the lip sync video tool accepts sources up to 1080p), while HeyGen offers 4K on its Pro plan.

If one photo and a short message is the whole job, make a talking photo with AvatarCraft AI with the free credits before committing to a subscription.

Which talking avatar tool should you choose?

The right tool depends on the job in front of you:

  • Translating existing videos into several languages: HeyGen, or D-ID Video Translate.
  • A team producing training videos with an LMS: HeyGen Business (SCORM export, LMS integrations, seats).
  • An interactive avatar on a website or in an app: D-ID visual agents and API.
  • A painting, mascot or illustration performing a long recording, plus b-roll in the same studio: Hedra.
  • A free D-ID alternative for one short talking photo: AvatarCraft AI, or HeyGen's Free plan.
  • A birthday wish, greeting or singing photo: AvatarCraft AI, including the AI singing photo generator.
  • The lowest monthly price: D-ID Lite ($5.90, watermarked); for commercial use, Hedra Basic ($20) and D-ID Pro ($29) both list it.

How do you test talking avatar tools fairly?

A fair test gives every tool the same photo, the same 20-second script, and the same voice choice. Twenty seconds fits the free tiers of HeyGen, D-ID and AvatarCraft AI.

  1. Pick one sharp, front-facing photo with even lighting and a visible mouth. Use a photo and voice you own or have permission to use.
  2. Write a script of about 50 words, for example: "Hi, I'm Maya. This week we shipped three updates: faster checkout, a new help center, and better search. Try them today, and tell us what you think. Big plans are coming next month, so stay tuned."
  3. Generate the clip in each tool with a similar library voice, then repeat with your own recording.
  4. Check plosives (B, P), long vowels, the first and last second, and whether the face stays recognizable.
  5. Note the watermark, resolution, license terms and credits used.
  6. Score each clip from 1 to 5 and pick the winner on your material, not on a demo reel.

FAQ

Is there a free D-ID alternative?

Yes. AvatarCraft AI gives new accounts 30 free credits, enough for one 20-second talking photo, and HeyGen's Free plan allows up to 3 videos per month. Hedra also offers a free plan, but its pricing page does not list the limits.

Which one does video translation?

HeyGen and D-ID both translate existing videos with voice cloning and lip sync; HeyGen lists 175+ languages and dialects on paid plans. Hedra has no dedicated translation tool on the official pages we checked, and AvatarCraft AI does not translate or dub videos.

Which is best for making a photo talk?

Hedra and AvatarCraft AI are the most photo-first of the four, and HeyGen and D-ID both support photo avatars too. AvatarCraft AI is the simplest choice for one face and a clip under 60 seconds, while Hedra suits longer takes and unusual faces.

Can I use my own voice?

Yes, all four tools let you upload or record your own audio, and all four offer voice cloning. On D-ID, voice cloning starts on the Pro plan; on AvatarCraft AI, cloning is on the Clone tab of text to speech.
